Anticipate things that may grow thorny while they are still easy to manage and do things that would become monumental while they are still insignificant.

What is acupuncture? How does it work?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures in the world. It is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a comprehensive system of health care with a continuous clinical tradition of over 5000 years. Ancient Asians recognized that the body's energy, known as Qi (pronounced "chee"), flows along specific energy pathways called meridians. When the flow of Qi becomes blocked, deficient, or stagnant, people experience the signs and symptoms of illness. Acupuncture utilizes more than 2000 points along the meridians to balance the Qi flow, stimulating the body's natural healing abilities to restore health.

Is acupuncture scientifically sound?

Yes. Each acupuncture point has a predictable effect on the energy passing through it. The system originated from carefully recorded observations passed by master to student over thousands of years. Modern science has been able to measure the electrical charge at these points, thus verifying the location of meridians first mapped by the ancients.

Does it hurt?

The sensation caused by an acupuncture needle varies. Some people feel a little pinch as the needle is inserted, but most people feel no pain at all. The needles are very thin, flexible, sterile, and used only one time. The needles are about the size of a human hair.

What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is recognized by the National institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to be effective for treating a wide variety of medical problems. A brief list of conditions that acupuncture has been effective in treating includes: addictions, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, depression, digestive disorders, emotional problems, fatigue, fertility, insomnia, menopause, migraine headaches, PMS, sprains, stress.

More details about treating these disorders are given on the treatments section of this web site.

How many treatments will I need?

Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than acute conditions. In general, the longer you have suffered, the more treatments will be needed. The number of treatments varies from person to person and depends on the cause of the problem and the length of time the problem has existed. Some people experience immediate relief; others may require months or years. Treatment frequency depends on factors such as your body's condition, the severity and duration of symptoms, and the quality and quantity of your Qi.

Does it really work? Do I have to believe in it for it to work?

Acupuncture is successfully used on animals. When treating animals, the placebo effect does not work. Since animals cannot “believe” in acupuncture, and positive results are observed, the conclusion is that you do not have to make up your mind until you try it for yourself. You will be in the good company of practitioners and patients who have been using acupuncture for close to 3,000 years and have found a good reason to continue. That is a fine track record.

How safe is acupuncture? What are the side effects?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding no side effects. Many patients feel very relaxed and rested after a treatment. Only single use, sterile needles are used and they are disposed of according to regulations.

Are treatments safe for children?

Yes! In some instances, children actually respond more quickly than adults. If your child has an aversion to needles, we can utilize needle-less techniques to achieve results. Especially when combined with nutritional and herbal therapy, athletic and academic performane can be enhanced as well as illnesses averted and the quality of life improved.

What is Chinese herbal medicine?

An herbal medicine prescription is a cocktail of many herbs tailored to treat your individual condition. The herbs are natural medicines in their inherent state, containing active ingredients along with other natural components that aid your body's ability to utilize them. The main herbal ingredients chosen target the underlying cause of your specific illness or ailment. Additional herbs are added to the custom blend to account for your individual yin/yang condition and to catalyze the ingredients' effectiveness for your condition.

Unlike Western medicine prescriptions which focus on relieving symptoms, Chinese herbal therapy targets the causes which is effective for preventing pain and illnesses as well as treating them.

Are the herbs safe?

The Chinese herbal formulas are created from natural substances with a long track record of effectiveness. The contents are verified through rigorous chemical analysis. I have been trained to understand and administer Chinese herbs and I keep my expertise current by attending seminars and studying with teachers. I am passionate about staying informed on the latest research and am aware of possible interactions between western medications and Chinese herbs. The herbal medicines greatly enhance the treatments.

Do I have to stop my medication before starting treatments?

Never stop taking your medication without the guidance from your primary care physician.  There is no need to stop medication for acupuncture to work.

Does acupuncture treat flu and cold?

Acupuncture has been proven to strengthen the immune system and to improve immune response. Several Chinese traditional herbal formulas contain strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial herbs. If you use these and some nutritional strategies (did you know that a teaspoon of sugar lowers the strength of your immune system significantly for several hours?) you can often ward off or greatly shorten any flu or cold.

Is it good for weight loss, sugar cravings, or smoking cessation?

Acupuncture greatly enhances your chance at being successful with your effort to lose weight or to conquer sugar or nicotine cravings. Excess weight is a serious deterrent to health and often happiness. Please do not let excess weight stop you from scheduling acupuncture treatments. I have compassion and understanding for the enormous struggle that achieving and maintaining healthy weight presents in our culture.

Nicotine addiction can be cured, often with several half hour treatments. You will see good results fast.

What nutritional supplements do you recommend? Can I buy supplements from you?

Yes. The supplements I recommend I take myself. They are all natural and contain bio-available ingredients. This is an important distinction because your body must be able to access the ingredients in order to benefit from them. Cleansing kits and detoxification programs are also available.
